Fish Pedicures, the Latest Rage, Being Banned in Some States for Health Reasons

Yes, we did say fish pedicures. Fish pedicures, all the rage for people with too much money and too much time on their hands, have been banned in Texas and Washington state. A fish pedicure consists of “doctor fish,” or Garra rufa, nibbling dead skin off of one’s feet, as they dangle in a pool along with the feet of other customers. The cost of such a pedicure typically runs $35 for 15 minutes or $50 for 30 minutes.

Garra rufa, also known as “reddish log suckers,” are native to Iran, Iraq, Syria and Turkey, Wouldn’t you like flesh-eating “log suckers” nibbling dead skin off of your feet? One wonders if tiny cuts on feet would be a means of disease transmission. Apparently, Texas state health officials have the same concern — last week, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) announced that fish pedicures are now banned in Texas. According to The Dallas Morning News, Susan Stafford, a TDLR spokeswoman, said that the agency is “concerned that using the same fish to clean the skin of multiple customers could transmit infections. It is in the realm of possibilities,” Stafford commented. “We are erring on the side of safety.” Good call.
