Despite battling almost-always-fatal pancreatic cancer since a January diagnosis, actor Patrick Swayze, 56, has been smoking on the set of his new A & E TV series, “The Beast,” in which the movie star plays FBI agent Charles Barker. The Hollywood hunk and three-time Golden Globe nominee is best known for his roles as dance instructor Johnny Castle in the 1987 chick flick, Dirty Dancing, and as Sam Wheat in the 1990 movie Ghost. Swayze, chosen in 1991 as People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive,” has smoked up to three packs a day for years. Swayze was also spotted smoking in March…while undergoing chemotherapy at Stanford University Medical Center.

By late July, apparently in remission, Swayze jubilantly told a photographer at the Los Angeles LAX airport: “I’m cooking. I’m a miracle dude, I don’t know why.” Recent research suggests that a smoker’s risk of developing pancreatic cancer is dramatically increased when smoking a pack or more a day. Smokers are twice as likely to develop the disease than are non-smokers. About one-third of pancreatic cancer cases are believed to be smoking-related. Keep up the good work.
