Silda Spitzer’s Annus Horribilis
With news of New York Governor Eliot Spitzer’s imminent departure on March 15 also came a New York Post article reporting that Hizzoner has been seeing prostitutes for the last 10 years, spending up to $80,000 on them and traveling as far as Florida for his trysts. He doesn’t like to wear condoms, either. While his wife, Silda Wall Spitzer, stood by No. 9 when he announced on Monday that he’d been snared in a prostitution sting, CNN’s Wolf Blitzer and his guest, former New York Mayor Ed Koch, noted last night that Silda, 50, looked as if she’d aged overnight.
Pajamadeen has wearied of the news of Number 9’s demise. Anyone who thinks they can maintain a low profile at the Mayflower Hotel is delusional. $4,300 an hour for a hooker? That works out to $83.00 a minute. Spitzer could have probably gotten four crackheads from Anacostia for $20 an hour. And thus David A. Paterson will become New York’s first black governor, its first legally blind governor and the Empire State’s first disabled governor since Franklin D. Roosevelt.
While the disgraced Governor faces disbarment, such disparate groups as Wall St., organized crime and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce celebrate. Spitzer portrayed himself up as Mr. Clean and had won the support of feminists for his legendary crime-fighting legislation, including pioneering legislation that tracked funds used in organized crimes…such as prostiution. This man is either arrogant beyond belief or not playing with a full deck. Or both. But the damage he’s done is not just to himself. He’s further damaged the credibility of all politicians with voters. And most of all, he’s shattered his family.
This is a man with three teenaged daughters, Elyssa, Sarabeth and Jenna, ages 17, 15 and 13 respectively. And yet he chose to exploit women. We feel sure that his children were proud of their crime-busting father. What message will they receive — that one shouldn’t trust men? That bad behavior is acceptable? His wife now learns that for almost half of their marriage, her husband was unfaithful. And he didn’t like to practice safe sex. She must be wondering about her own health.
Silda Spitzer is no fool. In fact, her name is a variation of an old German name, Serilda, which means “armed warrior woman.” A Harvard Law School graduate, she first worked in acquisitions, mergers and corporate finance for the firm of Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom, before moving on to The Chase Manhattan Bank, N.A. as part of its International Legal Group. Then she gave it all up, to stay home and raise the Spitzer children and to support her husband’s political career. In the process, she also founded Children for Children (CFC), a nonprofit organization which encourages young people to volunteer and perform public services. Her CFC efforts in teaching children social responsibility and community involvement have led to such accomplishments as raising money for bed nets for children in malaria-stricken countries; raising over $2 million dollars for underprivileged schools; and building classroom libraries by collecting hundreds of thousands of books.
Let’s hope for Spitzer’s sake that Silda still has some affection for him. But 10 years of cheating is a long time. Reportedly, her friends are urging Silda to divorce Spitzer. She’s certainly well positioned to do just that, and to clean his clock financially. Those hookers carried a much higher price tag than the initial $80,000 payments. Go, Silda!
