Happy Thanksgiving from Uncle Sam, Plus Great Dinner Rolls
November 25, 2010
Happy Thanksgiving from Uncle Sam, and those of us who work at Pajamadeen to bring you great WordPress websites! I’m truly proud of, and thankful for, the talented people who make Pajamadeen what it is.
This 1909 holiday postcard offers an unusual depiction of Uncle Sam. Usually seen in the context of political, military and Fourth of July postcards, here he offers up a turkey on a platter, as if to signify the bounty of the land. The abundance of red, white and blue provides a patriotic color palette.
What are you serving for Thanksgiving? We’re harvesting fresh turnips from the garden, for a combination that’s half mashed potatoes and half turnips. Harvesting of kohlrabi remains questionable, as the bulbs aren’t very large yet. If you waited until the day before Thanksgiving, you probably found that you could bag a turkey for as little as 59 cents a pound. We hope our gun-toting friends who went hunting for wild turkey came home with a prize, but 59 cents a pound is hard to beat in terms of effort expended.
We’re already munching on some of the best dinner rolls I’ve ever eaten. This recipe gets five stars from readers at allrecipes.com, and we can see why. A second batch may have to be made tomorrow, and these will definitely be on the Christmas menu. And thus we arrive at the recipe for Sweet Dinner Rolls. They begin life in a bread machine (We swear by our Zojirushi bread machine).
Prep time: 20 minutes. Cook time: 20 minutes. Ready: 2 hours, 20 minutes
Yield: 16 dinner rolls
Ingredients
1/2 cup warm water (110° F.)
1/2 cup warm milk
1 egg
1/3 cup butter, softened
1/3 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon salt
3-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
1/4 cup butter, softened
Directions
1. Place water, milk, egg, 1/3 cup butter, sugar, salt, flour and yeast in the pan of the bread machine in the order recommended by the manufacturer. Select Dough/Knead and First Rise Cycle; press Start.
2. When the cycle finishes, turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Divide dough in half. Roll each half into a 12-inch circle, and spread 1/4 cup softened butter over entire round. Cut each circle into 8 wedges. .Roll wedges starting at wide end; roll gently but tightly. Place point side down on an ungreased cookie sheet. Cover with clean kitchen towel and put in a warm place, let rise 1 hour. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 400° F.
3. Bake in preheated oven for 10 to 15 minutes, until golden.
